Product Description A young Baltimore lawyer is thrown into an ugly divorce proceeding and finds himself befriending his client, the charming and generous Sam Shoogey. Shoogey is a former war hero, college football star, professional boxer and novelist. Or is he? As more and more of Shoogey's sweet and funny tales unravel, the narrator unexpectedly finds himself drawn even more to Shoogey, posing the question, "Is a lie a lie if you know it's untrue, or is it just a story?" Kun again plays with the form and function of the English language to tell a captivating story in a new way with a combination of humor and tragedy. Readers themselves will become characters in the book when they are swept up in fantastical elements that make Kuns characters so real.

Beautiful yet hilarious treatment of a modern dilemma. June 3, 2005 E. C. Callahan (Albuquerque, NM) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is a noteworthy read. You Poor Monster is a clever story about our relationship with stories and the fiction that we need to enrich our own lives. The main character's fascination with a charming liar's fabrications is a powerful analogy to our relationships to truth and fiction. Very moving, well-constructed, and often funny... the work is unconventional yet totally approachable. Kun speaks with the reader rather than to him, and turns the idea of footnotes on its head as a hilarious way to connect the reader with the narrator's life. I've been inspired to get Mr. Kun's other three works...A lucky find!
It's a keeper! June 21, 2005 Lindsay Lancaster (Albuquerque, NM) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
When a book grabs your heart, moves you into a new space, or more simply, makes you laugh, it's a keeper. YOU POOR MONTSTER grabbed my heart. Kun's narrative set at the intersection of truth and tale moved me into a new space. It made me laugh outloud. Kun is one of the finest writers of our time--refreshing, witty, original. He deserves a greater audience. This novel makes you think while it makes you laugh--an accomplishment that's well worth the investment. It's a keeper!
I Really Love This Book March 3, 2006 Steve L. (Linthicum, MD) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
It is rare when a writer is able to put together a book that works on multiple levels. Mr. Kun has done that with You Poor Monster, which is the best book I have read in many a year. It is insightful, yet entertaining. It makes you question everything you have read, and everything you think you know. I am tempted to say, "I laughed, I cried, it's the feel-good book of the year," but that would suggest that it's some kind of silly, trifling book. But I did laugh, and I did cry. And I will look forward to Mr. Kun's next book.
A Little Jealous, "Lawprof"? June 7, 2005 Debra Rose "Deb" (Oregon) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I just finished the most amazing book -- Michael Kun's "You Poor Monster" -- and was shocked to see the poor review on amazon from someone calling himself or herself "Lawprof." Lawprof's review makes clear that he or she is pretty obsessed with Kun -- and pretty jealous of him. The fact of the matter is that Kun spent the past 15 years editing this wonderful book, and it was well worth the wait. It is a moving and touching story, with some of Kun's now trademark laugh-out-loud moments. I would not be surprised to see this book win the National Book Award, that's how good it is! Of course, that would only make Lawprof even more jealous! Go read this book! You'll love it.
Thank You For This Gift Of A Book! June 7, 2005 Literary Agent (New York) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is a note to thank the young lady at MacAdam Cage who gave me a copy of "You Poor Monster" at the Book Expo last weekend. I had read and enjoyed "The Locklear Letters," but it certainly didn't prepare me for THIS! "You Poor Monster" is the work of a genius. There's no other way to put it. Yes, it is funny. Yes, it is moving. Yes, it is sweet. But, mostly, it is profound. It is an exploration of truth, of the ways we lie to ourselves and others just to get by. At the end of the book, you are left questioning everything you've just read. There is one thing you won't question, though -- America has just found it's next great writer. Even if no one knows how to pronounce his last name!
